What does it take to run 13.1 miles?

    More than you think.

My wife just completed the Brooklyn Half Marathon after having five kids.

Her last marathon? Over 10 years ago.

Throughout her training, she endured countless nights of interrupted sleep as one kid after another needed something at 2 AM.

When her knee injury flared up, she didn’t quit. She pivoted to my indoor rower so she wouldn’t fall behind.

A week before race day, she caught whatever virus was cycling through our house.

And yes, she balanced all this training with working full-time and being a mom of five.

But she still showed up on race day.

Why? Because this wasn’t just about running.

She was raising money for PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy, the non-profit she founded to end preventable stillbirth.

That’s how we lost our son, TJ.

Every mile she ran carried purpose far beyond personal achievement.

The Moment That Made It Real

At her request, I joined her for one of the toughest stretches—that notoriously steep hill in Prospect Park that makes even experienced runners question their life choices.

Our kids lined the route, watching their mom push through exhaustion.

When her knee injury flared up during training, she didn’t quit. She pivoted to my indoor rower so she wouldn’t fall behind.

And when race day came, she crossed that finish line.

The Achievement Formula Hidden In Plain Sight

I’ve spent years working with high-performers and entrepreneurs, and what my wife demonstrated is the exact blueprint for achieving anything that matters:

    1. Start With Purpose Beyond Yourself

When the goal connects to something bigger than personal gain, the motivation runs deeper.

My wife wasn’t just running for herself. She was running for TJ, for other families, for change that matters.

    2. Ditch the Perfect Conditions Myth

There’s never a “right time” to start something important.

My wife didn’t wait until the kids were older or her schedule cleared up. She worked with the chaos, not around it.

    3. Develop a Flexible Plan

When her knee injury threatened to derail her training, she switched to rowing.

The plan adjusted; the goal didn’t.

    4. Build Your Support System

She asked me to run that hill with her. Not because she couldn’t do it alone, but because she was smart enough to know that strategic support amplifies strength.

    Your Turn: What’s Your Marathon?

What meaningful goal have you been putting off until conditions are “perfect”?

Here’s a prompt to get clear on what matters:

“What’s one goal that connects to my deeper purpose, and what’s the smallest step I could take today—even in imperfect conditions—to move toward it?”

Because the race that matters isn’t about perfect timing or ideal circumstances.

It’s about showing up, mile after mile, even when it’s hard.

    Especially when it’s hard.
