My mom used to work for the FBI.
Seriously.
Years later, when she was updating her resume, my dad asked why she didn’t include it.
Her response?
“It didn’t seem relevant.”
Now, I love my mom, but come on. That’s literally the most interesting thing on the page.
But here’s the thing…
She’s not the only one doing this.
Every day, I see entrepreneurs, experts, and high performers burying the most compelling parts of their story.
They say what they do.
Not why they do it.
They talk about deliverables.
Not identity.
And when people don’t feel you, they forget you.
I’ve Lived This Lesson
A few months ago, I went to a networking event hosted by Craig Siegel, author of The Reinvention Formula.
During intros, I gave the usual pitch:
“Hey, I’m Terry. I’m an author, consultant, and speaker…”
Totally forgettable.
Later, I spoke on a panel. Someone asked what I loved most about keynote speaking.
This time, I dropped the polished script and told the truth:
“I like helping people live and write better stories. I’ve overcome alcoholism and the loss of my son, so I focus on helping others find purpose in their struggles and experiences, and then turn that purpose into real impact, both in business and in life.
The room shifted.
People didn’t just hear me, they felt me.
And suddenly, I wasn’t just another expert. I was someone they trusted.
Why This Matters
If you’re a business owner—or anyone trying to level up—your story isn’t just relevant.
It’s your greatest asset.
It’s the shortcut to trust, authority, and connection.
It’s how people decide whether to hire you, promote you, or follow you.
You don’t need to be flashy.
You just need to be real.
The 3 Stories Every Expert Needs
- The Origin Story – Why you do what you do. Make them believe in you.
- The Transformation Story – Who you’ve helped and how. Make them believe it works.
- The Vision Story – What you’re building. Make them want to be part of it.
That’s it. You don’t need 50 reels or the latest dance moves.
You just need 3 stories that make people feel something, and do something.
A Prompt for You:
What story do you need to tell more often, and where could it create the most connection?
Drop that into your journal. Or, if you want to speed it up…
Amplify It with AI:
“Here’s my current business or career focus: [insert]. What are examples of personal stories I can tell that builds trust, shows transformation, and inspires action?”
