Ever had one of those days where you’re running on fumes, but the show must go on?

A few years back I was in Buffalo speaking at my alma mater. Since my niece lived there, I did what any good uncle would do, stayed up way too late catching up.

No big deal, right? Except for one small detail. I had two keynotes to deliver the next day.

I wasn’t worried. I knew my content cold and figured I could push through on minimal sleep.

Then my phone buzzed with a calendar reminder I’d completely forgotten about:

    “Interview with Shaquille O’Neal — 1:00 PM”

    Right between my keynotes.

In that moment, staring at my phone with bleary eyes, I realized I had a choice; panic or pivot.

    The Perfect Hour Framework

Standing in my hotel room, I looked in the mirror and said something that’s become my mantra for impossible days.

“You’re tired. That’s what it is. And you can’t be perfect all day, but for the next hour, you’re going to be perfect.”

That’s when I remembered a strategy I’ve used for years but never named, The Perfect Hour.

It’s simple. When you can’t win the whole day, win one hour at a time.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. Accept the Challenge
Acknowledge it’s going to be tough. No excuses, just clarity. This won’t be easy, and that’s the point.

    2. Anchor to the Why
Remind yourself who’s counting on you. What’s at stake if you mail it in? For me, it was hundreds of attendees who’d paid to hear me speak; and, you know, Shaq.

    3. Flip the Switch
For the next 60 minutes, nothing else exists. Eliminate distractions and execute. Zero complaints, zero compromise.

    4. Recover Like a Pro
High performance requires recovery. Block time to breathe, refuel, and reset. You’ve earned it.

    How It Played Out

For the first keynote I was laser-focused. Perfect hour activated.

After closing to applause, I found a quiet corner, drank water, and reset for 10 minutes.

Then, Shaq time. Another perfect hour.

The man is a walking energy source. Hilarious, insightful, and fully present. He even joked about talking to NFL hall of famer Jerry Rice instead of me, Terry Rice.

By the time we wrapped, I felt more awake than I had all day.

One more reset, then my final perfect hour, the second keynote.

Did I collapse afterward? Absolutely. But by then, it didn’t matter. I’d won the hours that counted.

    The Balance That Matters

The Perfect Hour isn’t about pushing yourself to burnout. It’s quite the opposite.

It’s about recognizing your limits and strategically allocating your energy where it creates the most impact.

You don’t need to be perfect all day. You just need to be exceptional when it counts.

The rest of the time? Be human. Rest. Recover. Laugh about the chaos.

Because the ability to be perfect for one hour when it matters most isn’t just a performance hack, it’s a sustainable way to create impact without sacrificing yourself in the process.

Stay focused. Stay human. Stay Savage.

    Terry

PS: The next time you’re facing an impossible day, remember: You don’t need unlimited energy. You just need The Perfect Hour strategy and the discipline to protect it. That’s where the magic happens.
