You’ve heard the news.
Or at least someone around you won’t stop talking about it.
Interest rates. Layoffs. Market dips. Uncertainty everywhere.
When the economy feels shaky, the instinct is to do more.
More offers. More posts. More meetings. More noise.
But panic productivity is still panic.
And urgency isn’t the same as importance.
There’s a quote from Oliver Burkeman that always brings me back to center:
“You can’t do everything. You can’t even do most things. So what’s worth doing?”
When in Doubt, Subtract
The most effective entrepreneurs and professionals don’t chase more; they choose less, done better.
While everyone else is scrambling to keep up with trends or overloading their calendar, they double down on the few moves that still work in any economy:
- Strategic communication
- Relationship-building
- Meaningful execution
Here’s how that played out for me.
What I Quit to Focus on What Matters
I stopped pouring time into my YouTube channel.
It wasn’t growing. It wasn’t converting.
It was more of an ego project than a growth strategy.
Now?
That time goes into following up with leads and improving systems that actually generate results.
So, What’s Draining You?
Ask yourself:
What are three things you’re doing right now that wouldn’t matter if you stopped tomorrow?
(Hint: These are usually the things draining your time and delivering the least return.)
Here’s a simple 3-question filter to help you focus:
- Does this directly move revenue, trust, or visibility?
- Would I still do this if I only had 10 hours a week?
- If I stopped, would anyone notice, or just me?
The ROI of Subtraction
Subtraction isn’t about doing less work.
It’s about making space for the work that actually moves your life and career forward.
Especially in uncertain times, that’s not just a good move; it’s a competitive advantage.
