I was melting in the heat last Sunday, pretending I knew something about coaching 6-year-olds, when my phone buzzed.
A sales call had been booked.
I didn’t remember asking anyone to schedule a meeting.
Hell, I was focused on explaining why you can’t just throw the ball at the basket and hope for the best (advice that applies to business, too).
But there it was. Someone had watched my sales video, filled out my intake form, and booked themselves into my calendar.
While I was teaching kids to dribble, my business was dribbling leads into my pipeline.
Not sure if that was a metaphor or a dad joke but this is how you can set up your own system.
Here’s How I Built a System That Sells While I Coach
I’m on a relentless pursuit to reclaim time. More family moments, more workouts, and less time explaining why I can’t just “hop on a quick call” at 9 PM.
But I still need to work with coaching clients I genuinely like and know I can help.
So I built a three-step process that does the heavy lifting for me:
1. Created a VSL (Video Sales Letter)
2. Promoted it strategically on social media
3. Set up automations that work while I’m not
Let me break this down.
Step 1: The VSL That Actually Converts
A video sales letter is essentially a mini-presentation that explains your offer, addresses objections, and makes the case for working with you all without you being there.
They work because people can see and hear you before they buy from you. It builds trust at scale.
I used AI to write the script by feeding it:
- The sales page for my coaching program
- Information about my ideal client
- This prompt: “I need to create a VSL for my audience highlighting the benefits of my coaching program. Pretend you just consulted the world’s best sales copywriter and write a script that addresses their deepest pain points while positioning my solution as the clear next step.”
At the end of the video, viewers are prompted to book a call if they want help.
Then I hired an editor on Fiverr to make it look professional. You can watch it for yourself here.
Total time investment: 3 hours.
Step 2: Social Media That Actually Works
Instead of posting the video directly, I used it as a lead generator.
I’d create valuable posts, then end with: “DM me if you want to see how I help clients [specific outcome].”
The image below shows the final card of a carousel post teaching people how to set up routines that work for them.

I always thought that tactic sounded corny. Turns out, corny works when you provide real value first.
The key? Give people something useful, then make the ask feel natural.
Step 3: Automations That Close While You’re Closed
This is where I was embarrassingly behind. I used to set up marketing automations at Adobe, but somehow neglected my own business for years.
Here’s what I built:
- LinkedIn auto-responses when people DM me
- Loom video hosting for easy tracking and sharing
- Intake forms that feed directly into my calendar
- AI-powered call prep based on their responses
When someone messages me now, they get an instant response with my VSL link.

After watching, they can book a call if it resonates.
No back-and-forth scheduling. No “let me check my calendar.” Just value, then action.
Want to see it in action? Send me a message on LinkedIn.
I set up a similar process on Instagram using my Stan store.
The Results That Made Me a Believer
Since launching this system last week, I’ve booked two new clients without a single cold outreach.
The moment that sold me? One client said, “I watched your video and felt like you just described me perfectly. This is what I want.”
That’s the power of doing the selling before the selling.
But, full disclosure, both of these individuals were aware of me before watching the video, it was just the necessary tipping point.
Makes you wonder how many people already trust you, but just need a little more information to feel confident moving forward.
Total setup time: 6 hours.
Time saved per week: Countless.
Well, technically there are only 168 hours in a week but you get the point. It saves time and makes money.
Your Turn: What Could You Automate?
Maybe a VSL isn’t your next move. But here’s the real question:
What friction are you tolerating in your business that you could eliminate with the right system?
The best professionals don’t work harder, they work smarter. They build systems that scale their expertise without scaling their time.
Ready to Build Your Own Sales System?
If you’re interested in creating a VSL that converts, I can help. Part of my coaching involves walking clients through this exact process from script to automation.
I’ll even connect you with my Fiverr editor and walk you through the recording process.
Book a strategy call and let’s design a system that works while you’re living your life.
And keep this in mind.
The right system doesn’t just save you time, it gives you permission to be present for what matters most.
Take it easy,
Terry
PS: This is actually a post that landed me a sales call using this system.
It didn’t go viral, but it did get results. Proof that the right message, shared with the right people, beats chasing likes every time.
