The Real Work · Every Thursday

One real decision.
Run through the test.
Every Thursday.

Every week I take something I was actually stuck on, run it through the three questions in public, and show you the move it produced. Written for people who have to decide something before Friday.

What's actually in it

Three parts. Same order. Every week.

01

What I got wrong

A real decision from that week, including the part where I was reading it wrong. Named people, named stakes.

02

The system that fixed it

The actual mechanism, written out so you can run it without me. A procedure, not a principle.

03

A test you can run this week

One specific exercise, usually twenty minutes, that puts the system against a decision you're already carrying.

A piece of one

"You already have the talk."

August 20 · sent to 8,985 people · 51% opened it

I was inventing a talk. What I should have been doing was remembering one.

Everybody tells you to use stories because audiences remember them. True, and it's not the reason that matters. The reason that matters is that you remember them. You cannot forget something that happened to you.

You're not looking for the most impressive thing that ever happened to you. You're looking for the moment you were stuck, because everyone listening has been stuck too.

Who writes it

Terry Rice.

Brooklyn. Father of five. Sober since May 15, 2015. Still in the gym five days a week.

He writes this because he had to figure it out the hard way. Every system in here was tested on a real decision with real stakes before it went in an email.
